RATS win prize at the Southern Counties Drama Festival What an exciting evening !! Our entry started off the performances and was by far the best of the night. The adjudicator spoke favourably about the set, direction, acting, sound effects, characterisation, overall atmosphere, etc and only offered a couple minor “suggestions” as to how it could have been better. Overall he was very complimentary and awarded us the : RUNNER-UP (second place) CUP !!!!!!!!! Congratulations to the team—Tim Sinclair (director, actor, set designer, set building), Ben Hilder (actor), Jo Ellen Anderson (stage manager, props, wardrobe, set painting), Randy Anderson (sound board, stage crew, set building), David Sadler (stage crew, dumb waiter operation), and Laura Wills (stage crew, dumb waiter props). Thanks also to Jim and Diana Tadd for creating the sound effects and support during the technical rehearsal and to Jo Sinclair for her help and patience during rehearsals. Thanks also to the Festival Committee and Barn Theatre volunteers for making the festival possible.
Set in the dingy basement of an abandoned restaurant in Birmingham, two hit-men, Ben and Gus, nervously await their next assignment. As the tense atmosphere heightens with Gus' relentless chatter and Ben's reading of the newspaper, the situation leads to comic yet threatening bickering. As the suspense grows, the scene takes an eerie turn as the old dumbwaiter suddenly comes to life. When inexplicable yet absurd orders come down to the basement, Ben and Gus get uncomfortably closer to discovering who their next victim is. Keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, The Dumbwaiter is a classic dark comedy which shows Pinter at his allegorical best. The Characters
